Resources / Import substitution
What is import substitution?
Import substitution means sourcing domestically something previously bought from abroad. Customs import records offer a starting point: they show companies that have bought products from overseas.
A manufacturer looking for buyers and an importer looking for suppliers face a similar research problem: finding a company that works with the right product.
Give domestic products the same reference as imports.
Reshore classifies domestic manufacturing products as if they were being imported. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule provides a shared classification system, allowing listed products to be matched with customs shipment records.
A ten-digit code describes a more specific category than an eight-digit subheading or six-digit family. Reshore explains the level of the match so a team can decide which companies to contact.
Turn the match into a business discussion.
The product code helps identify a relevant company. Specifications and commercial terms are agreed directly between the businesses. Reshore supports the research and contact, with no brokering, bidding, or commission.
What a gap in the directory can tell you.
An imported product with no manufacturer listed locally can prompt a recruitment or expansion discussion. It describes a gap in the listed network, rather than proof that no domestic supplier exists.
